Photo from 29 May. It wasn't just bees that were eager for the pollen and nectar of this silver linden tree that was one of first in town to come into bloom. I had the insect identified as Rhagonycha fulva in a Bulgarian entomological group on Facebook. Wikipedia says " common red soldier beetle," but I swear ours are ( Read more... )

As I was having my walk in the late afternoon/early evening of yesterday (9 October), I was very surprised to spot this hyacinth in full bloom. We had had a few day of spring-like weather, but still… it was early February. The hyacinth didn’t look freshly planted, so it must have come into bloom on the spot. I have fond childhood memories of the house martins of the apartment building where I used to live as a child; there is something like a terrace on the roof that was open to everybody at the time, and we the children would climb up there and drop pieces of cotton wool, which the martins would catch to line their nests. You know that autumn is coming when you see house martins, swifts and bats flying all at the same time in the evening, which typically happens in early September here; even if the weather is still summer-hot and the trees are still green, that’s an unmistakable sign of autumn.
